Opera Garnier, Paris

A short walk from our hotel takes us to the extraordinary Palais Garnier Opera House.
It is a magnificent building with a beautiful, wide staircase lit with enormous crystal chandeliers, marble of various hues, an opulent Italianate theatre in deep red velvet and gilt, painted ceilings inspired by the Sistine Chapel and galleries influenced by the Palace of Versailles.
It really has to be seen to realise the extravagance and beauty of the building, which has left us a fabulous legacy of another era.
